A record-setting legacy
Alice Hyde Medical Center receives largest individual gift
in the Medical Center’s history
ALICE
Hyde Medical Center accepted its
largest individual gi in the Medical Center’s
history—more than $400,000—from a trust
fund established by former Malone residents
Bernard (Ben) and Shirlee R. Krakauer
Cohen.
“We’re very grateful for the Cohen’s
generosity,” says Medical Center President
and CEO Douglas F. DiVello. “ eir care and
concern for the health of this community
will not be forgotten. is gi will help many
people for years to come as an inspiring
legacy and reminder to leave our world in
better condition than how we found it.”
Both Cohens were dentists who had their
dental o ce at the Flanagan Hotel in the mid
1940s and practiced in Malone for 39 years.
Shirlee Cohen was also the school dentist
at Chateaugay Central School
from 1954 until 1974. Well known for their
kindness, the couple supported numerous
hometown causes.
“I wish I could have known them
personally,” DiVello says. “ ey were
incredible supporters of our youth and our
communities.”
Frank Moerschell, Trustee of the Cohen
Family Trust, presented the philanthropic
gi to the Medical Center board of directors
at a recent board meeting. According to
Moerschell, long-term legal and nancial
planning coupled with prudent investment
management were keys to securing the
sizeable gi . “ ey were comfortable with
how they le their money,” Moerschell says.
“ is donation is a testament to their love for
the community and the hospital.”
Enduring kindness
A bequest such as this is
one of the simplest ways to
give to the Medical Center.
Legacy gi s ensure that high-
quality, local medical care is
available to the community
for generations to come.
“ roughout the course
of history, we have found
one measure of our
community’s character in
the level of commitment one
neighbor has for another,”
DiVello says. “ e Cohens
displayed an example of the
extraordinary character that
can be seen all around our
region. eir memory will
continue to be honored by
the lives this gi touches.”
Generosity in action.
